Client Spotlight: North Dakota Women’s Business Center

Step By Step Accounting has worked with North Dakota Women’s Business Center for just under a year now, and we recently connected with Christy Dauer to learn more about their work and their experience working with Step By Step!

Tell us about your business, it’s mission, and how it came to be!

“Women & Technology, dba North Dakota Women’s Business Center (NDWBC) is a 501(c)(3) founded in early 2000 in Bismarck, North Dakota. When the organization was founded, our goal was to develop simplified computer materials for use in rural small businesses and to teach business owners to utilize technology as a business tool. Over the last two decades of demonstrated track record of supporting marginalized entrepreneurs, NDWBC has grown to facilitate a variety of programs, trainings, and events across North Dakota. While our name has evolved, our best-in-class programming remains steadfast, in person and virtual events, and services provide our clients with the tools and opportunities to move forward and be successful. Our niche is women and the growing new American population across the state. Our clients share the challenges they encounter including lack of capital/cash flow, financial management, marketing expertise, time management, and recruiting/retention of employees that impact their growth and decision making. Managerial and entrepreneurial skills are unrelated to gender, but the opportunities for women to develop and grow these skills have been limited by barriers. Women who seek entrepreneurial success continue to face barriers that we identified during our team’s strategic planning.”

What are some of the services you provide?

“We receive a federal grant and supported by the Department of Commerce to provide free and confidential business coaching. In addition, we have annual partners that support Strong Women, Strong Connections, The Business of Childcare- programming for Childcare business owners, and our Annual Summit.”

How did you find our firm and what made you decide to work with us?

“Being partially federally funded, we procured bids from many agencies, ultimately Melissa and team came out ahead. Working with a woman owned business and the approach to non-profit accounting partnership has been incredibly helpful.”

What were some of the challenges you faced before working with our firm?

“Our biggest challenges are similar to other non-profit organizations, fundraising, fundraising, and grant writing.”

How has Step By Step brought peace of mind to your business financials?

“Step by Step treats clients like a partner, we are involved and regularly connect with the Step by Step team for a level of transparency that has drastically improved our ability to navigate our growth.”

What are some wins you’ve seen since working with Step By Step?

“Together, we have implemented QBO projects that have made our grant reporting much more efficient. We also appreciate the straightforward approach and the ability to communicate regularly as a true partnership. We are beyond grateful to the entire Step by Step Team.”
